VICTORIA PUBLIC SCHOOL

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

There are many exciting things happening at Victoria during the month of February!  We are very pleased to be working in partnership with our local high school, A.N. Myer, to give our students an opportunity to work with their students.  On February 8th, our grades 2 – 6 students will have the opportunity to go to Myer in the morning to engage in activities run by the Myer students and staff.  In the afternoon, Myer students will come here to read with our afternoon Kindergarten class and our grade 1’s.

Members of the Niagara Falls Canucks will be visiting the school to read with our students on the afternoon of February 9th.  This is a great way to support our MS Read-a-thon.  A stick and Canucks jersey, both signed by the team, have been donated for a school draw.  Thanks Canucks!

This month we will also continue our dance lessons and skating trips.  Please see the February calendar sent home last week for more details.

ALLERGIES AND ASTHMA

There are currently staff and students at Victoria who have allergies and asthma.  We ask that all of our students, parents and community members respect the concerns of these individuals by avoiding the use of strong perfumes and fragrances while in the school.  Your cooperation in keeping Victoria a safe and enjoyable place to learn is appreciated.

FAMILY DAY – MONDAY, FEBRUARY 21st

This is a reminder that there will be no school on Monday, February 21st as it has been designated as Family Day.  Please enjoy this extra holiday time together!

French Immersion Open House

There will be an Open House on Thursday, February 24th at 7:00PM at Prince Philip Public School for those grade 4 students (and their parents) interested in attending French Immersion next year.

The New Provincial Report Card

On February 9, 2011 all Grades 1-8 students will bring home the new elementary report card. The Progress Report in November provided you with information about how your child was learning in the classroom and gave an indication of progress towards achieving the curriculum expectations for all subjects.

Learning Skills and Work Habits are an important focus of the new report card.  These are critical life skills that students will work on from Grades 1 to Grade 12.  Teachers evaluate how well students are achieving these skills for their grade level and include a comment about each student's strengths and some next steps for continued growth.

For each subject being taught this term, your child will receive either a letter grade (Grades 1-6) or a percentage grade (Grades 7 & 8).  If
